One of the characters I am a huge fan of. He's the creation of Catherine Jinks, and features in the books Pagan's Crusade, Pagan in Exile, Pagan's Vows and Pagan's Scribe. These are absolutely fantastic books set in the 1190s during the times of the crusades.
Pagan Kidrouk is a 16 year old in the first book, living on the streets of Jerusalem. He's been in a bad crowd and is now signing up with the Templar knights - the fighting monks. He's paired up with a knight, because they're desperate for squires- most of the others have died. Pagan's knight is Roland, a tall, blonde, blue eyed, strong and silent, Frenchman, who is illiterate and set in his ways. Pagan is sarcastic, tiny, half arab (his mother was raped), literate (he was dumped in a monastery, so learnt to read and write), who is really rather experimental. They quickly create a bond with each other that is obvious throughout the entire series of the books. And it's basically about their lives and 'adventures'. It is absolutely fantastic, written in first person, and snarky and wonderful. Jinks covers a lot of issues not usually found.
Anyone else a fan?
It has some interest /connecting themes to Maid Marian! Same 'era' anyway. _________________ Please your majesty! Spare my crab and sweetcorn!!! |
