What are some weird misconceptions you've heard people say about Maid Marian? My online friend knows that I like the show, but she's never seen pictures of them or anything, she just knows that i'm obsessed. I had Robin up as my avatar on msn, and she was asking me who it was, so i told her, and then i said something about how i love the show. She said 'lol... maid marian' and i said 'what?' and she said 'i just think it's hilarious that they made a show about the old legend, and that it's an aussie show'

... ...
yeah. lol
I said 'what made you think it was aussie!!!' and she was like 'since you're aussie and you're borderline obsessive with it, and i've never heard a british person mention it'
Laughing

I don't really hear anyone discuss Maid Marian anymore. If I mention it they tend to have no memory about it. It's funny since it's rarely discussed in real life, but online people remember it. It's not like it wasn't a success or isn't selling well currently, because we know thats not true. I just think people need more than a name to refresh their memories.

yeah. my friend is american though, she hadn't even heard of Blackadder or Red Dwarf, so i can't expect her to have heard of it from anyone other than me.
She's spoken to maybe 10 british people in her life... (her own words) so i just find it amusing.
Also she was saying that i act like i'm proud of the show, ie because my country made it. um nope...

Anyone else had friends with weird misconceptions, after what you've been telling them?

I mentioned Maid Marian to my friends a while ago, and they were like '...What?' so I told them it was a parody where Marian was the boss and Robin was a bumbling idiot, it was written by Tony Robinson and Danny John Jules from Red Dwarf was in it as a Reggae rap singer. And one of my friends looked up and said 'They've made a Reggae version of Robin Hood for Blackadder?' I just looked at her like she'd just said the dumbest thing ever... Which she kinda did...

Everyone I know remembers it perfectly and loved it, don't know what that says about my friends.

Mind you, Blackadder and Red Dwarf are absolutely legendary in my circles, pretty much everyone has them all and will recognise any quote instantly.

It's mainly down to age range, if you're about 20-30 now you've got a good chance of remembering it fondly.

There are exceptions, though - I'm 17, and remember it (though it may be the 1995 repeats, though that's only a year later than Series 4). I've been posting since I was 12.

I remember all the oldish shows like this, from the 70's and 80's but mainly because my brother brainwashed me when I was a baby in the 90's.
I honestly remember being like 3 and watching stuff like Black Adder and Red Dwarf and MM of course, and The Mary Whitehouse Experience - but I've been brought up with British comedy - and radio comedy, but I guess nots the same as being able to remember all the original showings - but apart from MM, they were mostly shown after my bedtime, so Tim would tape them and show me them the next day.

It's quite nice when you've been exposed before you could even fully understand the shows - that means you have multiple forms of memory. Childhood fondness and then greater understanding and adoration later on.

You'll always have a stronger attachment to something you've known forever to something excellent and new. Well that's what I reckon.

I find it strange (and sad) that, even though Maid Marian was hugely popular back in the day, it now seems rather obscure, at least compared with other similar programmes. Having said that, I spoke with a pair of 17 year-olds recently (they were born in 1991! They weren't even around when Maid Marian was first aired!) who said they remembered it. Also, when I was at a party last weekend (which was held in a 12th century castle, so there was a bit of a medieval theme going on) I asked a girl there if she remembered Maid Marian, and she said she did, and that it was awesome. She then said, 'How do you watch it?' and I told her that you can buy it on DVD. So I think that more people *do* remember Maid Marian than they let on, it's just that they don't realise how readily available it is. Let's spread the word!

I so agree. I can't remember not knowing Maid Marian and that's why I'm so attached to it I think. And like you said, I appreciate it more now that I'm older.

I always try to spread the word. It was Keith's original message board which gathered online fans, that led to this forum and our constant badgering for a DVD, which proved successful. Now we have the DVDs and probably nothing else to hope for, all we can do is promote them.
